UPDATE, UPDATE, UPDATE: We were so blessed with everyone's donations, that we were able to go to Panama for Holly's stem cell treatment. We are holding a fundraising dinner in May (more on that in a minute). Holly did very well with her Stem Cell treatment. The clinic was just amazing! We saw immediate results while we were still in Panama! With us holding her up, she started taking steps! Within 3 days of us being home, she started walking with her posterior walker. While still in Panama, she was able to hold her sippy cup and sit up in her highchair for the first time! This is huge progress in such a short time! We are looking at possible needing to go back for one more stem cell treatment in the upcominng months, to further her progress with walking! We are still paying off her first bill though. A family member, Gloria Costello, has organized a fundraising dinnner at the Knights of Columbus at 2660 E Main St Wappingers Falls, NY on Friday 5/13/11 at 5:30 till 9:00 PM. Below is Holly's story....
Holly was born 10 weeks early and spent 10 long weeks in the neonatal intesnsive care unit. Her and her twin sister, Bethany, were real fighters. She was later diagnosesd with PVL. This means that there was an area in her brain that sustained lack of oxygen due to unknown causes. The PVL is affecting her like cerebral palsy. She is 17 months old (one year 5 months). She has difficulty sitting up and cannot crawl or walk. She is a smart little girl and loves other babies. She is always pointing at pictures in books saying babies.
We are seeking funds for stem cell treatment for her. Stem cells are being used at Duke to treat cerebral palsy, but she is not eligible for the treatment as I could not bank her cord blood. A stem cell clinic in Panama is using donated cord blood for the stem cells. She is felt by all of her doctors to be an excellent candidate. The clinic is stating 85% improvement with cerebral palsy patients and feel that she is even a better candidate than that based on her age and medical health. She will be put under general anestheia on the first day so that a shunt may be put in her arm, the following 4 days she will stem cell IV therapy. She will receive about 20 million stem cells total. The stem cells should travel to the damaged part of her brain and make new nerves in that area. The cost of the treatment is $15,500, not including travel expenses. We have the money for half of the cost, and are looking for help. Please help any way you are able. Please pray for her.
